Frans-Louis Nel

Biography
Frans-Louis Nel is a Cape Town–based Art department professional working across props, set dressing, graphic design and on-set standby. He has worked on productions for Showmax, Netflix and kykNET, handling everything from sourcing and fabricating props to dressing sets, creating fictional brands and managing practical requirements on set.
A major part of his work is finding practical, inventive ways to make props feel believable on camera. He has strong experience in 3D modelling and 3D printing, using both to design, prototype and finish custom hero props that cannot simply be bought or rented. His work also includes soft weapons, signage, branded packaging, fabricated neon signs and detailed graphic elements built specifically for the world of a production.
Frans-Louis also creates interactive digital props, including working email clients, cloud-storage systems and search engines that actors can use live during a scene rather than relying on pre-recorded playback. With an Honours degree from AFDA in Visual Effects and Production Design, he is comfortable moving between the workshop, art office and set, and enjoys solving unusual creative problems with a mix of traditional fabrication and new technology.
